aletter.jpg (2136 bytes)   One of the most interesting seminars I attended was one given years ago by Ron Trego; Ph.D, entitled "People Dealing with People." It was an action-packed workshop on "Transactional Analysis," the revolutionary technique that was made popular by the classic book "I'm OK—You're OK", by Tom A. Harris, M.D.

It's difficult to recall all of the things I learned. But, one particular thought further crystallized my thinking as to why some people have motivational problems when dealing with others.

The subject was "stroking," and according to Dr. Trego, stroking is ". . . an investment of yourself in someone else." Dr. Trego went on to discuss five different kinds of strokes people give people. Of those, I distinctly remember two. I found the answer to our motivation problems; however, in the one stroke he didn't mention.

According to Dr. Trego, the two main strokes are the unconditional positive stroke and its opposite, the negative stroke. It appears that all people want to be stroked. The stroke most often sought is the "positive" one. We all want to be told how important we are, how we are needed and/or loved, and how good a job we do. It appears that if we do not get this sought-after positive stroke, we will accept the negative ones . . . the "put downs." We don't like to be told we "are stupid," or we "look terrible," or we "are not cooperative." Yet, in the absence of positive strokes, we will accept and sometimes even seek the negative ones.
