It was during one of my engineering program assessment meetings at I.C.
Manufacturing Co., in El Campo, Texas that it happened. Tom Marrow, plant manager, was
asking the supervisors whether any operator had problems adjusting to the positive changes
taking place throughout the factory. After the laughter subsided, the head supervisor,
Mrs. Mary Ellen Benavidez said . . . "We don't have problems here, Tom, only
challenges!"
In the second act of Shakespeare's great play by the same name, Hamlet is tossing words around with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The conversation turns to prisons and Hamlet says, "Denmark is the worst of prisons." Rosencrantz replies he does not think of Denmark as a prison. "Why then," says Hamlet, "tis none for you. For there is nothing either good or bad, only thinking makes it so." I feel both Shakespeare and the supervisor who made that telling comment are right. It was the positive attitude she and all the other fine supervisors of that company had, that made the modernization program so successful. That attitude converted problems to challenges.
All too often at seminars I hear, "That idea wouldn't work for us; you don't know our people!" My answer is the same to all . . . "If you say that, and believe it, then you, not your people, keep new ideas from becoming realities!" What are you afraid of . . . progress? Only the person who has done nothing is sure that nothing can be done.
I say, "Look for trouble." I say, "Find the challenge. From challenges comes progress." I received a HallmarkÒ card from Wayne Kemmerlin, production manager of InRoads, Dallas, Texas that says it best.
"Every man has within him the ability to do great things. His touchstone is challenge.
"No matter what his field of endeavor, a man must measure himself against the demands of the world.
"To rise to the challenge . . . ultimately this is the reason men build bridges, climb mountains, and do a thousand other things that manifest personal achievement and satisfaction."
